James Franco Presents The Director a Film By Christina Voros! Xx

On APRIL 8, 2014 Fashion and Cinema in association with
Gucci and Vanity Fair 
hosted the UK premiere 
of James Franco's documentary film,
 “The Director” at the Curzon Cinema in Mayfair.

This was the first of two amazing Documentary Films
on Italian Designers that Fashion and Cinema
had arranged for this special week of
Italian Fashion and Cinema Festival
Both Directors had complete creative control
and so the films showed a very interesting
side to the Fashion Business.

In the 1960s, American movie icons traveling to Rome noticed 
the exceptional craftsmanship of a local leather shop 
founded by Guccio Gucci in 1921. 
They returned to Hollywood and appeared 
in films with the bags and shoes 
that would help to make the Florentine brand 
an international fashion powerhouse. 
Ninety years later, Gucci's Frida Giannini is taking 
inspiration back from the cinema
—as well as art, music, and life. 
Since rising to Creative Director in 2006, 
Giannini has delved into the fashion house's rich archive to reinterpret
 the house's iconic designs as she simultaneously 
redefines a legacy of her own.

THE DIRECTOR, produced by James Franco and directed by Christina Voros, 
is the story of Gucci under Giannini: the portrait of a designer who has 
nurtured a deep connection to the past in order to carry 
forward a legacy into the future. A film in three acts, 
THE DIRECTOR spans 18 months behind the walls of the fashion house, 
exploring the intricacies and inspiration behind the quietly brilliant
 power woman whose own evolution as the creative force behind the 
brand is as nuanced as that of the storied Florentine house itself.

Christina had met James Franco through their Professor at NYU
James had the idea for the film and asked the Professor for
suggestions for a cinematographer.

He had been the face for the Gucci cologne and said 
'we should do a movie on Frida'
It took a bit of time to get her to agree.

They shot film for two years. It was an
evolution from beginning to end.
Christina told Jemima that she hated being in front of camera,
 so she undersood that it was difficult for Frida being such
a private person.

Christina sees the film not as a fashion film more a film on Frida Gianinni the person.

Christina's great aunts owned a couture shop on the upper east side
of New York so growing up she was surrounded by  textile fabrics and sequins
so the first documentary was on those two women.

Frida had started at Gucci as an accessories designer in 2004
when Tom Ford had left the label.

Although not well received by press, they were a commercial success 
so she was promoted to Creative Director.

The interesting thing about Frida was despite her private side  she is
at the top of game.  She has reached there with perseverance and elegance.

There was 350 hrs footage cut down to 2 hours and Frida was 
pleased and surprised with finished film.
Christina had total editorial control.

You can see in the film how Frida abandons an idea 
since 'A bad idea never gets better'

In the interview Jemima tells Christina that she finds 
Frida's Intuitive decision making 'impressive and striking'.

Christina was happy she was holding the camera when the models
were being scrutinised for not walking properly and not looking quite perfect.
The level of perfectionism in the fashion world is notoriously high and can
be seen in this film.
Frida says herself she is selling a dream and has to achieve that.

Frida is shown to be a very grounded person
she loves all the old things in the Gucci archive.
In the film we see her visiting China which she believes represents the future.
Frida buys a red Gucci backpack in a store - a reproduction
for the Gucci Archive.

You see in the film how Frida likes to spend time with 
her parents and her family by the sea.  She can 
as she says 'clean and polish her mind'
and make it free for new creative ideas.
Her father talks about her and says he is glad
that she is beautiful also on the inside.
When she was young he 
gave her a white room so she could paint what ever she wanted
on the walls.  He had noticed that she was very
good at line drawing and knew that she was naturally creative.

We see her at home cooking spaghetti alle vongole,
running on the beach -  free as child,
and explaining that after college when she was 
23 she had 4 interviews in same day.
She was accepted by each interview and chose internship in Rome 
where her boyfriend was.  This turned out to be the right choice because it
 kickstarted Frida's career.

We see how down to earth she is talking and laughing about fish recipes,
with the designers the hard work with all the
crucial decisions and
checking the hems completely perfect before a show because of the linings.

We see Frida creating the Gucci Woman 
Strong and confident but with a softness, lightness and sexyness

In 2011 she created, in collaboration with Lapo Elkann the Fiat 500 by Gucci,
 a special edition of the iconic italian car.

Before the film we went to Nobu at the Metropolitan for dinner
with Delara and Alicia from MSL and Viola Levy
