Johnny Depp first met Hunter in 1995 when he was with Kate Moss 
and Terry Gilliam directed the
first Hunter S Thompson film that Depp starred in with Benicio del Toro

Hunter S Thompson shot himself in his kitchen at Owl Farm Woody Creek, 
near Aspen Colarado February 2005.

 Robert Chalmers was at Hunter S Thompson's memorial event at Aspen's Jerome Hotel funded by Johnny Depp later that same year.  
The writers remains were detonated into the night sky in accordance with his wishes from a 153 ft column to the accompaniment of Bob Dylan's Mr Tambourine Man. 
Other guests included Ralph Steadman, Bill Murray & Harry Dean Stanton.

The Rum Diary is a book written by Hunter S Thompson in the sixties based on his experiences as a reporter in San Juan Puerto Rico.  
The book was not published until 1998, after Depp had discovered the manuscript
in an old box.
